Exceptional Red Electrical Discharge Photographed in the Atmosphere

A team of photographers operating in New Zealand have managed to photograph photographs of “red sprites”, one of the most elusive light phenomena on Earth, in which glowing scarlet illuminations appear in the sky.

A Memorable Night of Discovery

This group of artists began their evening to capture the Milky Way over the distinctive clay formations in the lower part of the country on a night in October, when they chanced upon the rare phenomenon.

Initially believing they would be fortunate to get good weather that evening, but their night became “a truly memorable experience,” one photographer commented.

While reviewing his files for a galaxy composite and realized he had photographed scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the photographer explained. “The discovery was astounding – we experienced excited exclamations and various reactions in the night.”

Understanding Red Sprites

These crimson flashes are electrical discharges in the upper atmosphere, caused by thunderstorms. Unlike conventional electrical strikes that shoots towards the surface, these events shoot upwards towards the mesospheric region, producing structures that are similar to vertical forms, carrots or even bell-shaped organisms. The earliest recorded picture of a this phenomenon was captured – by chance – in that year, by a research unit at the a academic organization.

Momentary and Ethereal Sightings

They are so brief – persisting for a mere instant – that they are infrequently observed to the naked eye, but an individual was fortunate. “I was coincidentally viewing right at an occurrence when it occurred – just a perfect coincidence viewing the correct area of the sky and I witnessed a brief red flash,” he explained.

Seeing the phenomena was a goal for the artist, an award-winning nocturnal imaging specialist. “It appears as if you are observing something that is not real, it appears mystical … the color is a profound crimson that is there for a split second, so it is captivating to observe.”

Technical and Innovative Mastery

Recording a such an event requires a expertise in advanced imaging techniques, as well as an familiarity with atmospheric physics and creative flare, he explained. “This is a highly complex category of art that’s highly fulfilling as well.”

Another photographer remarked it was among the “most incredible evenings” of his career. “I could see the starry river glowing above the distant edge while these enormous red tendrils of energy danced above a thunderstorm at a great distance,” he explained.

An Exceptional Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no other images depicting red sprites and the galactic core from the southern perspective in a single image.

“It represented a unique instance when you realize you are seeing a phenomenon you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
