Trans director Sam Feder's newest film "Increased Examination" offers a compelling dual viewpoint – simultaneously an personal profile of a key transgender activist and a critical examination of media reporting surrounding transgender rights.

Judicial Battle at the Supreme Court

This feature documents ACLU attorney Chase Strangio as he gets ready for court proceedings in the significant Supreme Court case US v Skirmetti. This legal battle occurred in December 2024, with the court finally ruling in support of the state's position, practically permitting limitations on healthcare for transgender young people to remain in effect across numerous US territories.

We produced Heightened Scrutiny in merely 16 months, stated Feder during a discussion. By contrast, my earlier film Disclosure took me five years, so this was a real push. Our purpose was to stimulate dialogue so people would understand more about the case.

Personal Narrative Amid Legal Battle

While Feder offers a thorough analysis of how mainstream media outlets have disseminated anti-trans rhetoric, the film's primary achievement may be its engaging portrayal of Strangio. Typically a reserved attorney in public appearances, Strangio displays his authenticity throughout the documentary.

This represented a major challenge, to share parts of my life to a camera lens that I had worked hard to keep private, explained Strangio. Sam explained he wanted future generations to know that we struggled, to see what was done in support of these struggles for our material survival.

Diverse Perspectives in the Struggle

To support Strangio's story, Feder includes various transgender advocates, such as respected leaders from activism and entertainment. The documentary also includes viewpoints from non-trans allies who analyze how respected organizations have added to negative reporting of trans individuals.

The perspective of trans youth central to the legal case is shown through a remarkable young activist named Mila. Audiences observe her speaking out for her peers at a school board meeting, with subsequent scenes showing her protesting for transgender rights outside the highest court.

Intimate Scenes Beyond the Legal Battle

Heightened Scrutiny also includes emotional moments where Feder moves beyond the never-ending political struggle, such as sequences of Strangio vacationing in Italy and receiving a tattoo featuring verses from activist Pauli Murray's poem "Prophecy."

The tattoo scene is one of my preferred parts in the movie, stated Strangio. Being tattooed is nearly like a reflective experience for me, to be totally engaged in my body and to view it as a vessel for things that are important to me.

Body Autonomy and Portrayal

The filmmaker's attention to carefully capturing Strangio adding to his tattoo collection underscores that this film is fundamentally about trans physical selves – not only those of youth who face restriction of their right to live genuinely in their own bodies, but also the bodies of the various subjects who appear in the film.

I create films with a meaning, and part of that is choosing people who are brilliant and eloquent enough to hold the camera, stated Feder. Whenever people ask me what they should dress for an filming, my response is anything that makes you feel attractive. That is crucial to me – as transgender individuals, we face challenges so much with our image.

Impact and Hope

One factor that makes Feder's films stand out is his obvious skill for making his trans participants feel comfortable, recognized and admired. This methodology creates genuine rapport between Feder and Strangio, helping the filmmaker to accomplish his aim of showing Strangio as a multifaceted person and leaving a document for future generations of how determinedly he and fellow activists have campaigned for transgender liberties.

I hope not people to find themselves in a state of incessant despair because of what the law is denying us, stated Strangio. I aim to be in a practice of using the law to lessen harm, but not to turn it into some type of conduit for our liberatory possibilities. State bodies is not going to be the mirror through which we view ourselves. We are that mirror, and it's extremely vital that we keep having that discussion together with dialogues about fighting back these regulations and procedures.
